Five years ago, Sal Raniero was a loyal son and responsible friend. Giving everything he had to his family and friends, he was on his way to becoming the man everyone expected. But he harbored a dark secret. He needed pain…a lot of pain. With his masochism searing through his veins when the offer is put before him to push his servitude further, he cannot resist. Between praying and playing on his knees, he is confronted with the last thing he expects. His heart. Torn between becoming the golden boy of Juliet and just another guy with a fetish streak, he makes a decision that will chart the course for the rest of his life. Take the journey with him and discover what made the boy into the man. THE INITIATION is part of Kailee Reese Samuels’ series of novellas. Scenes from Juliet are all new companion books to Juliet. These are not excerpts from Juliet, but further glimpses into the characters, backstory, and behind-the-scenes. While they can standalone, they would be better enjoyed with the preliminary reading of Juliet.

Review:

I started reading The Initiation before I went to on to read Juliet and I have to say that honestly, this is really nothing like anyone would imagine when talking about BDSM books.

If we consider that the previous books touching the subject was Fifty Shades, we can safely say that it is not a common genre I tend to read, but the subject of BDSM was something I did study is one of my advanced Psych classes as an undergrad so I am familiar a bit with the inner workings.

Both books are mostly revolving around Sal who is a masochist (likes to receive pain) and his journey in the BDSM community he belongs to and then in Juliet we have the addition of Iris who then becomes his “love” interest. You will notice I put love in quotes cause Sal loves a lot of ladies.  I kept wondering if he grouped a lot of emotions under love, because the way he is and interacts with them shows a lot of difference in the range of emotions but all labeled as love with Sal.

You guys know I am always super straight with you, if you ask me which I liked best I would have to say The Initiation.  It was shorter, a lot of things were happening and it was faster paced.

Juliet is a different story all together.

There is so much character development in terms of pretty much everyone. Kailee went in and dug deep and it made it so so so slow in terms of the progress.

Those of you who read my blog know that I love my action packed fast paces.  Though not all books can be this way due to their plot lines. Juliet was imho the slowest I have read in ages. In my head, I kept yelling move it along already!!! Now, do not get me wrong this doesn’t mean at all that Juliet is not a good read in any way, that is not what I am saying.  What I am saying is that my preference is faster paced paced books. This one is not, slightly frustrating for me, but it is still really well written, very detailed and like I said before nothing like you would imagine.

Yes it has kink and lots of sex and so much drama between all the characters, but it isn’t about cheap thrills.  I think anyone who has never read anything related to BDSM would actually learn a lot in terms of the lifestyle. It is I felt a very blunt view.

I mentioned Sal above first since he is the main guy in both books, but let us not forget Iris who is also going on a self discovery journey after the death of her husband.  She is a complex character and it was interesting to see her grow through her own eyes.  Let’s be honest being vanilla and discovering this world would be a shock to a lot of people.

Kailee is a fantastic writer and so much can be done in exploring the characters, my gosh there are so many books that could be written covering everyone in Juliet.

These books offer a rare introduction to the theme of BDSM novels and frankly it is a far above Fifty for a lack of better comparison.

This is not going to be a quick read but I can tell you it will certainly not be a dull one.

We learn something new every day!
